Representative Payee Program

The Mental Health Association Representative Payee program exists for those persons with a mental illness who have had difficulty managing their finances. Repeated difficulties with budgeting can lead to unnecessary hospitalization and/or crises for those individuals who are trying to stay well in the community. When bills aren't paid or utilities are turned off, consumers may be placed under undue stress, which in turn may cause a recurrence of symptoms of mental illness.

The purpose of the program is to offer opportunities for mental health consumers to increase their ability to provide for their own basic needs, increase their ability to cope with day to day living, maintain more stability in their lives and maintain the greatest degree of independence possible, by providing timely financial management assistance to mental health consumers in the least restrictive setting, for those individuals who have no close family or friends willing to take on the task of handling their finances.
